How does Photo Rejuvenation Treatment Work
Photo rejuvenation uses intense pulsed light (IPL). The specially filtered wavelengths of light energy which are readily absorbed by the high concentration of melanin (brown pigment). The rapid absorption of light energy heats the melanin in and eradicates the melanin-rich cells which are then absorbed by the body. IPL also helps with fine lines and wrinkles, the light stimulates the growth of collagen which makes the skin feel plumper and more youthful.
What To Expect After Your IPL Treatment?
The most common side effect is a darkening of the more superficial brown spots of the areas being treated. This darkening of superficial brown spots will flake off after about 7-14 days. The area may slightly swell and feel hot like a sunburn after treatment. .
The improvement is gradual over a series of treatments. Use of a broad-spectrum SPF50 sunscreen should be used in order to maintain the improvement, and we encourage patients to wear hats after treatments for extra protection while the skin is more sensitive. 3 to 5 intense pulsed light treatments are generally given at 4 weeks apart. The improvement in redness and pigmentation is gradual, resulting in a more even tone and younger-looking skin for the patient.
